Membership

Founded in 1948, the Society for Theatre Research brings together theatre researchers and the public to promote excellent research and practice. We are only able to do this through the support of our members, whose annual subscription helps keep the STR at the forefront of theatre research.

As well as the membership benefits below, joining the Society means being part of a supportive community. We bring together theatre researchers – both emerging and established – with theatre professionals, as well as those who simply love and want to learn more about performance. If you ever have a theatre-related question you’d like us to ask, or if you want to find people to collaborate with, get in touch. We’re also in contact with media outlets who ask us for recommendations of scholars working in certain fields. As a member you’ll be part of that conversation.

As important as what you get back, though, is what our members give to the wider research community. Your annual membership fee helps us encourage and promote the best in theatre and live performance research. It helps us to make our Lecture Series free and open to all. It supports the Poel Workshop, which gives talented performers free training from the best in the business, and funds an Annual Prize for the best book on the theatre published that year. It allows us to fund a New Scholars Prize and give our New Researchers’ Network the help they need in supporting emerging scholars. Finally it funds new research by all types of scholars – academic, independent, practitioners and theoreticians – on a vast range of subjects via the annual Research Awards.

We can only do this with your support, so we very much hope to welcome you as a member to the Society for Theatre Research.

When joining, as a new member, you are invited to choose any five books from the STR’s catalogue for only £25.  For an additional £20 you can add a copy of our Diamond Jubilee publication, a full-colour facsimile of James Winston’s The Theatric Tourist (full retail price £45).

Subscription Rate Changes

From October 2019 the subscription rates are changing. This is because so many of our necessary expenses are rising sharply, particularly those incurred in posting out our publications (especially overseas). The Society has not increased its subscription rate for individual or corporate members for ten years, and we are committed to keeping subscriptions as low as we can, in particular for our student members. Please see the documents available here for more information about this.

The new rates will be as follows:
Individual Members UK: £ 40.00; Overseas: £45.00
Student Members UK: £ 17.50; Overseas: £ 20.00 (unchanged)
Corporate Members UK:£ 50.00; Overseas: £ 60.00
Life Members (65 and over): £ 400.00
Theatre Notebook UK: £ 30.00; Overseas: £ 40.00

If you are joining or renewing before October in order to receive this year’s publications (Theatre Notebook Volume 73, or the Annual Publication Sarah Baker and her Kentish theatres, 1737-1816.) your subscription remains at the 2018 – 2019 rate.
