CALL FOR PAPERS

Dates: Thursday 18–Sunday 21 July 2024

Location: Wills Hall, University of Bristol

Theme: Papers and Panels on all subjects in British theatre research are welcome

The Society for Theatre Research was founded in 1948 to serve all those interested in the history and technique of British and British-related theatre, and in the decades since, it has brought together academic and independent scholars, researchers, performers, and other theatre workers. As well as publishing specialist theatre books and the academic journal Theatre Notebook, the Society stages lectures, study days and other events. It also supports its own New Researchers Network, presents a prize for the best theatre book of the year and runs the Poel Workshops for recent entrants to the acting profession.

In celebration of the Society’s 75th year, we will be holding a conference in Bristol in July 2024. We intend this conference to reflect the breadth of participation and interest that has marked out the Society since its beginnings. To that end we invite proposals for papers and sessions dealing with any aspect of British theatre. Subjects and areas could include – but are not limited to – acting, theatre administration, theatre buildings, circuses, collections, criticism, dance, illustration, music hall, staging, pantomime, performance, set design, theatre objects.

The conference will include an event to honour David Mayer and Jim Davis.

Submitting abstracts: Abstracts should be submitted by 23.59 on 15 March 2024. Abstracts of papers (20 minutes), panels (three or four papers of 20 minutes), roundtables (up to five participants), and alternative formats (of your own devising, including short performance-based workshops) should be a maximum of 200 words and should be accompanied by a biography of all participants of 150 words. They should be submitted as Word files to: jacqui.julier@new.ox.ac.uk.

Enquiries: Any enquiries regarding the academic programme of the conference should be addressed to the Society’s secretary Dr Brianna Robertson-Kirkland via the STR email address contact@str.org.uk.

Please note proposals are subject to our Terms and Conditions.
