Social Visit To The Grand Order of Water Rats Headquarters and Museum

Wednesday 4th March 2020 2pm

In our recent member surveys several people were keen that the Society organise some social events and outings for its members.  We are very pleased to announce our first planned event: a visit to the Headquarters of The Grand Order of Water Rats, the showbusiness fraternity and charity founded by Music Hall performers in 1889.

Starting at 2pm, the visit will include a conducted tour of the Water Rats Lodge Room and Museum, a talk on the history of the organisation by one of the members and a short film. Over coffee and biscuits there will also be the chance to win some theatrical mementoes. The Museum of Entertainment houses a wealth of historical theatrical memorabilia including costumes and artifacts won and used by some of the greatest Music, Hall, Variety, Film and TV Stars including Dan Leno, Charlie Chaplin, Harry Lauder and Tommy Cooper. There is a well stocked library which members will be able to browse as well.

This special opportunity  – an absolute must for anyone interested in Music Hall and Variety – is open exclusively to Members of the Society and their guests and will cost £20 per person (which includes a donation to their charitable fund).  You may book here via the website, paying by PayPal or BACS, or you may send a cheque, made payable to The Society of Theatre Research  to
STR Water Rats Visit,
12 Morgan House,
57 Vauxhall Bridge Road,
London, SW1V 2LF

along with your name, e-mail address and contact telephone number.

Booking Deadline Wednesday 26 February 2020. No tickets will be issued but confirmation of your booking will be given by e-mail or phone.

There would also be the opportunity for Members to meet earlier and have lunch in the Water Rats pub downstairs if they so desired at normal pub prices.

(The fish and chips and bangers and mash are particularly good).
