Under Two Managers: The Everyday Life of the Thornton-Barnett Theatre Company 1785-1853

by Paul Ranger

The circuit of theatres operated by Henry Thornton and his son-in-law Edward Barnett ranged from Oxford to the Isle of Wight and westward and east to Arundel and Croydon. Thornton progressed from strolling player to wandering manager at first in barns and temporary premises then from his permanent play-house. Here we meet his family and other company members, their repertoire and roles and the practicalities of life on the circuit and learn about the theatres they played in.
