The STR is 75!

The Society is 75!  And the Book Prize is 25!
We are celebrating both at the Actors’ Church, St Paul’s Covent Garden,
on Thursday June 15th from 6.30pm

Admittance to the church is by invitation or booking here on the STR website only. The occasion will also be livestreamed. Please tell us if you wish to attend in person, otherwise we will assume you are watching online – there is a box to tick on the booking page where you enter your name and address.

The Society itself was founded on Tuesday 15 June 1948, at a public meeting held in the war-damaged Old Vic, with no stall seats and just a few working lights. People entered by way of the Stage Door and foregathered in this cavernous shadowy space, summoned by leaflets and by a letter in the Times Literary Supplement.

The Theatre Book Prize was established to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Society for Theatre Research in 1998, and its aim is to encourage the writing and publication of books on British-related theatre history and practice, both those which present the theatre of the past and those which record contemporary theatre for the future.  It was first awarded for books published in 1997.

Gathering at 6.30pm in St Paul’s, we will first be awarding the Book Prize for the best of books on theatre published in 2022, and then there will be further celebrations and entertainments to honour the Society, its aims and achievements. The evening will finish by 9pm.

Booking will close at midnight on June 14th.
