Gentrifying popular entertainment: operetta and burlesque at the Gaiety Theatre, London, 1868-1886

London’s Gaiety Theatre, under the management of John Hollingshead, popularised a new style of musical theatre. In his own words, Hollingshead proclaimed himself a “licensed dealer in legs, short skirts, French adaptations, Shakespeare and musical glasses.”  Dr. Innes’ talk will draw upon her recent research.

Speaker: Dr. Eilidh Innes has completed her PhD at Anglia Ruskin University.
