“Are we all met?” Shakespeare among the amateurs, then and now

This year’s lecture will look at how, since Peter Quince’s company, amateur performance has contributed to Shakespeare’s popularity and longevity, often engaging with his works in ways unexplored in the professional theatre.

Michael Dobson is a distinguished Shakespeare scholar who has held academic posts at several American universities and Chairs at the Roehampton Institute and Birkbeck College, University of London, before taking up his current post as Director of the Shakespeare Institute at Stratford-upon-Avon and Professor of Shakespeare Studies at the University of Birmingham.

The annual Wickham Lecture was established by the Society for Theatre Research, in conjunction with the University of Bristol, to commemorate its former President Glynne Wickham.
