You are invited to join us to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the opening of the original Waterloo Bridge on 18th June 1817. The bridge, designed by the civil engineer John Rennie, was opened by the Prince Regent with the Duke of Wellington in attendance. The highly theatrical event was depicted by John Constable in a painting which now hangs in Tate Britain. The bridge soon became famous and has been the inspiration for many artistic works.

Devised and directed by STR committee member Sue Solomon, and with a talented cast, the programme includes a short comedy by Richard Brinsley Peake, “The Bridge that carries us Safe Over” (performed at The Lyceum Theatre on the day of the opening) and “Night Bridge”, a dramatized picture of life on the bridge at night in the 1870s by the journalist James Greenwood. There will be plenty of music as well.
