Unfinished Histories

This project records British Alternative Theatre, 1968-88 through interviews and the collecting of archive material. The interviews document the alternative theatre experiences of our Interviewees in the context of their background, upbringing and later occupations.

Companies involved were among some of the first Black, Asian, lesbian, gay, women’s, disabled, political, experimental, TIE and community- based theatre groups seen in Britain. Work ranged from experiments in physical and visual theatre or performance art, to vernacular drama, agit-prop and satire, championing a generation of artists whose work has influenced and shaped present day theatre.

More information is available at the Unfinished Histories website, which
gives details of the interviews and interviewees with audio and video extracts. The site also contains extensive information on companies, venues, individuals, organisations and events active in alternative theatre and links to related projects and archives.
