Tobias Hoheisel is an internationally renowned set and costume designer of over 70 opera and theatre productions for almost all major British opera and theatre companies including Glyndebourne, English National Opera, Royal Opera House, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Almeida and Royal Court, as well as companies in Europe, Brazil and USA. Hans Werner Henze’s Boulevard Solitude, with Tobias’ sets and costumes for the Royal Opera, was awarded the 2001 Laurence Olivier Award for best opera production. Tobias has recently been working freelance in the UK, Europe and the U.S.A.

Judith Flanders is a social historian focusing on nineteenth-century Britain. Her The Victorian House was nominated for the British Book Awards History Book of the Year. She combines historical research with arts journalism, concentrating on theatre, dance and the visual arts.

With Period. Question Mark?, Tobias Hoheisel and Judith Flanders will explore the theory and practice of period drama and opera, discussing what decisions need to be made by designers and directors, and how and why period works, or fails to work, on stage, and how its meanings can differ for creative team and audiences.

The evening will break into two parts: an examination of the theory of period design, as it is approached by authors, followed by the designers who realize their ideas, and by the choices that must be considered when dealing with older works; then it will explore how, and why, choices of period are made and/or rejected by the creative team: what we can know of a period, how it can be conveyed, how the knowledge bases of the audience and the designer must be fused in order to create a stage-world that gives the viewer a conduit into the emotional heart of the piece.
