STR Lecture: March 19th – Wilhelm: Realism, fantasy and spectacle on the fin de siècle stage

2025 marks the centenary of the death of Wilhelm, one of Britain’s leading designers for pantomimes and musical comedy, including Gilbert and Sullivan operettas,  He is probably best remembered for his designs for ballet, notably collaborating with choreographer, Katti Lanner, and ballerina, Adeline Genée.  Wilhelm involved himself in the direction of pantomimes (particularly with his brother-in-law’s father, impresario Oscar Barrett) and ballets at both the Empire Theatre and London Coliseum. He was involved with spectacular productions and truly creative collaborations..  The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a collection of Wilhelm’s designs for the stage.  Jane Pritchard, curator of dance for the Victoria and Albert Museum, will discuss the career of this fascinating and multi-talented theatre designer.
