The New Researchers’ Network Committee are happy to announce their winter event, which is to be held in the John Lewis Community Hub, Birmingham, 10am-4pm on the 6th February 2020.

In today’s academic market PhD students have to be multi-skilled.  Not only do we need to write our thesis and do our research, but we are also often expected to teach.  Whilst this provides an opportunity to develop valuable skills, it can be a challenge to meet the demands of teaching and research. With minimal experience, the idea of teaching can be quite daunting, and there is little support or training available.  This event provides an opportunity to share and celebrate good practice and provide you with some guidance and advice with practitioners with a wealth of experience.

The day’s discussions will be inspired by two formal addresses by Dr Richard Bale and Dr Dawne Irving-Bell. There will also be opportunities to meet other members of the NRN to facilitate future collaborations and connections. Specifically, we invite postgrads who teach to share their experience and struggles in the afternoon session. We recognise that the life of an ECR can be quite isolated so we want to help our members connect and build a supportive community.

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

Dr Richard Bale is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Educational Development in the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship at Imperial College London and a Senior Fellow of the HEA. He previously designed and led an Advance HE/HEA-accredited Graduate Teaching Assistant Programme (GTAP) for doctoral researchers who teach at Imperial College. His research interests include the performative aspects of teaching and the academic development of teachers in Higher Education. Richard’s forthcoming book Teaching with Confidence in Higher Education: Applying Strategies from the Performing Arts is due to be published by Routledge in April 2020.

Dr Dawne Irving Bell is a Principal Fellow of the HEA and Senior Lecturer in Teaching and Development at Edge Hill University.  Dawne leads on the University’s Graduate Teaching Assistant Teaching in Higher Education Programme, and the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education Developing Practice through Pedagogic Research Module. Her research interests include the formation of learner identity and the Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoTL), and she also enjoys lecturing on visual thinking and advocates for technology and design education.
