John Liston, Comedian

by Jim Davis

Unlike his contemporaries Kean and Kemble, John Liston is little known today, but he was one of the great performers of the first third of the 19th century. A star renowned for his creation of Paul Pry and many other comic roles, he sometimes played against type, including a Romeo in a benefit for his wife. This, the only full-length biography, records his professional and private life, including a reported addiction to spirits, and explores the origins and characteristics of his art.
