This is a study of British playbill cuts and engravings showing performers and scenes from shows, not the many more that are merely decorative images. It considers them as evidence of actual stage presentation as well as the ways in which they are used promotionally. The book gives particular emphasis to blocks listed in the now very rare catalogue of c.1865, produced by the Steam Printing Works of E.J. Bath in London’s Whitechapel, and reproduces it in facsimile.
