As those who attended this year’s AGM will have realised from our financial reports, the Society’s costs have gone up shockingly in the last couple of years –  particularly as regards postage. Having kept our subscription rates the same since before the pandemic, we are therefore regretfully now having to raise the rates by a small amount to cover some of these heightened costs.

To join or to renew your membership for 2024-2025, simply click on the appropriate button in the choices below.

Note you can also make up the 2023-2024 subscription if required. The 2023-2024 late renewal box is right at the bottom of the options, together with a £5 top-up box for anyone who has inadvertently subscribed at the old rates.

Membership

Founded in 1948, the Society for Theatre Research brings together theatre researchers and the public to promote excellent research and practice. We are only able to do this through the support of our members, whose annual subscription helps keep the STR at the forefront of theatre research.

As well as the membership benefits below, joining the Society means being part of a supportive community. We bring together theatre researchers – both emerging and established – with theatre professionals, as well as those who simply love and want to learn more about performance. If you ever have a theatre-related question you’d like us to ask, or if you want to find people to collaborate with, get in touch. We’re also in contact with media outlets who ask us for recommendations of scholars working in certain fields. As a member you’ll be part of that conversation.

As important as what you get back, though, is what our members give to the wider research community. Your annual membership fee helps us encourage and promote the best in theatre and live performance research. It helps us to make our Lecture Series free and open to all. It supports the Poel Workshop, which gives talented performers free training from the best in the business, and funds an Annual Prize for the best book on the theatre published that year. It allows us to fund a New Scholars Prize and give our New Researchers’ Network the help they need in supporting emerging scholars. Finally it funds new research by all types of scholars – academic, independent, practitioners and theoreticians – on a vast range of subjects via the annual Research Grants.

We can only do this with your support, so we very much hope to welcome you as a member to the Society for Theatre Research.

In addition, whenever they join, new members are invited to choose any five books from the STR’s catalogue for only £25 (excluding back issues of Theatre Notebook and The Theatric Tourist).  For an additional £20 you can add a copy of our Diamond Jubilee publication, a full-colour facsimile of James Winston’s The Theatric Tourist (full retail price £45).
