A rare opportunity to see Commedia dell’Arte, performed by Bottegavaga, one of Venice’s premier Commedia troupes. Arlecchino & Felicity is Bottegavaga’s newest devised show, inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
Felicity’s read Romeo & Juliet – and now she can’t find her way out of the tragedy. Never was there a story of more woe! But when a strange masked Italian – Arlecchino – comes onto the scene, he promises to sort things out. Cultures clash in a bid for the Bard! But can there ever be happiness in tragedy? Only Arlecchino can tell. A journey celebrating life and love…with a most unusual couple.
Actors Vanni Carpenedo and Bettyna Andriolo bring Shakespeare’s constellation of characters to life with masks, movement and music. Performed in English and Italian, this stylish physical storytelling will transport you to Italy in a blend of tradition and innovation.
Arlecchino & Felicity is part of Bottegavaga’s current research project on the historical and cultural links between Shakespeare and Commedia. “Bottegavaga has long been fascinated with the potential synergybetween the two,” explains director Alberta Toninato. “Our new show reinvents Commedia dell’arte for the international audience of Camden Fringe.”
Reviews:
“I would like to congratulate the company and actors for an absolutely outstanding performance. They worked magnificently. For me, it’s been one of the highlights of all the Festivals that I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy.”
- Richard Demarco, founder-member of Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Bottegavaga is based in Venice, the city where Commedia dell’Arte was born. With over 20 years’ experience as actors, acting teachers and workshop leaders, we seek to elevate Commedia dell’Arte as a living form of Italian popular culture. We create original work, striving to attain a daring, risky balance between tradition andinnovation. Bottegavaga partners with Teatro A l’Avogaria and Teatrino in Via Pasini di Marghera (Venice); Confartigianato Venezia (storytelling through oral histories); Arte-Mide (immersive performances about Venetian women).
