The Stephen Joseph Award of the Society for Theatre Research: to Phil Smith, a freelance playwright and researcher, for work on 'Street Performance and Public Rituals in Exeter, 1830-1930'.
Adrienne Darvay-Nagy, a freelance writer from Budapest, for work on 'Hamlet at the turn of the Millennium'.
Dr Bridget Escombe of Leeds University, for presenting a production - Measure for Measure and Promos and Cassandra: Alternatives to Character Study in Early Modern Drama' at the IFTR conference in Amsterdam.
Dr Agnes Juhasz-Ormsby, Postdoctoral Fellow from Toronto, for work on a critical edition of the Coronation of Anne Boleyn by Nicholas Udall and John Leland.
Martin MacGilp, an NHS accounts assistant, for work on puppet theatre in Scotland.
Dr Amy Sargeant of Birkbeck College for work on 'Stage Acting in Early Screen Performance'.
Dr Elizabeth Schafer, Head of Drama at Royal Holloway College, for illustrations for an edited book, Playing Australia .
Steve Walker, a writer and artist, for travel and materials for the 'Jimmy Learmouth Restoration Project'.
Total awards granted in 2002 come to £4,000.
Including the above, the Society has now made grants totalling £58,750 to 141 recipients since the first awards in 1988.
