The STR's marquee at Garrick's Temple.

Jubilee Garden Party

THIS EVENT HAS TAKEN PLACE

22nd June 2008
Garrick's Temple, Hampton, London

About seventy-five members and guests visited Garrick's Temple, on the banks of the Thames at Hampton, to meet old friends, and enjoy the Society's Jubilee garden party. Built by David Garrick in 1756 to honour Shakespeare's genius, Garrick's Temple at Hampton, with its idyllic riverside setting, was the perfect spot for these celebrations.

Earl's Court Baroque inside the temple.

Hogarth's 'David Garrick as Richard III'.
Inside the temple itself, Earl's Court Baroque made the most of the marvellous acoustics and treated the assembled company to a selection of their wide repertoire, including some familiar pieces from Corelli, Handel and the Beggars Opera, and also including three pieces of music receiving their modern premiere. (These were a Masquerade Minuet, 'Peggy Wynne' by James Hook, and a favourite song of Kitty Clive's from a Henry Fielding afterpiece 'Farewell ye Hills and Vallies'.) The extraordinary instrument pictured is an archlute.

The rare Egyptian goose.
Inside the STR's marquee, which served perhaps unexpectedly as admirable protection against the strong gusty wind (rather than rain for which it was intended), strawberries, cream, cakes and biscuits were on hand for the hungry and, of course, celebratory champagne for the thirsty.

The whole proceedings were watched by a family of rare, but friendly, Egyptian Geese.
