The First Flemish Wave: Belgian Avantgarde Theatre in the early 20th Century

THIS EVENT HAS TAKEN PLACE

Friday, 20th March, 2009, University of Kent, Canterbury, Virginia Woolf College, W1-SR3 (this is not a postcode)

European Theatre Research Network Research Lab
The first from Dr Peter Boenisch at the University of Kent...

Contemporary Flemish theatre and its artists such as Jan Lauwers, Jan Fabre, Alain Platel, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and Wim Vandekeybus have revolutionised European theatre in the last decades of the 20th Century, with its artists now eventually present on British stages throughout the country.

With this Research Lab, we want to explore, however, an earlier era of theatre and performance experimentation that emanated from Belgium in the early years of the 20th Century, between Symbolism, Surrealism and the rarely reflected popular performances in Variety Theatre.

We are pleased to invite you to join us as we welcome distinguished experts on Flemish theatre, past and present, to this ETRN event at the University of Kent: Professor David Willinger from CUNY New York, Professor Christel Stalpaert and Dra. Evelien Jonckheere, both from the University of Ghent.

Free of charge, but spaces are limited.
Please register with P.M.Boenisch@kent.ac.uk
