Mr Albert Smith's Ascent of Mont Blanc, presented by Marcus Risdell

April 2008

THIS EVENT HAS TAKEN PLACE

Albert Smith.
On the morning of the 13th August 1851, Journalist, author and Garrick Club member Albert smith arrived at the summit of Mont Blanc. Although only the fortieth ascent of the mountain, it would shortly become the most celebrated when, in March 1852, he launched his entertainment based on the climb. Smith's lecture, delivered fdrom a Swiss chalet erected in the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, was an instant success and ran for over 2,000 nights.

This talk first introduced us briefly to the life of Albert Smith, before concluding with a recreation of his ascent, using his own words and images, as they were presented 150 years ago.

As well as being Librarian & Archivist at the Garrick Club, Marcus Risdell is also known to have climbed a few mountains.
